NRF F'SATI audit

February-May 2017

During this 2017 year the F’SATI has been submitted to an Audit from the NRF in order to evaluate the evolution and the performances of the Institute between 2008 and 2015.

The panel was composed by the Professor FJW Hahne, Stellenbosch Institute of Advanced Study, the Dr Y Guenon, Izibani Consultancy, South Africa and the Professor F Septier, IMT Lille Douai, France. The key mission of this audit was to determine how sustainable the institute was in its current form and to suggest what improvements should be made in the future. On this occasion, the management of the F'SATI was led to write a self-assessment report to prepare the work of the audit committee. Then, the Institute's Board of Directors also proposed a series of responses to the suggestions and remarks of the auditors.

The result of the audit is largely positive and the following documents mentioned above can be consulted on demand in the F'SATI offices.

• The Self-Evaluation Report,
• The Review of the F’SATI Programme 2008-2015,
• The Management Response to the Evaluation of the French South African Institute of Technology (F’SATI).

DIPLOMACY AWARD for F'SATI

fsati award

December 2016

During the closing ceremony of the Science Forum South Africa 2016 that took place in December the F'SATI had the honour to receive the Diplomacy Award as an international STI partnership which has made an outstanding contribution to human capital development (especially for young and women scientists) in South Africa.

Ms Naledi Pandor, Minister of Science and Technology, presented the award to the F'SATI representatives from France and South Africa.

This recognition of 20 years of collaboration for human capital development in science and technology is also an incentive to continue and extend the cooperation with other institutions, giving opportunities to develop their postgraduate careers to more South Africans students.

F'SATI thanks the Minister for this recognition that the collaboration has succeeded in its objective and all the partners, Professors, students and alumni for their involvement in the institute.

F'SATI comes of age

1996-2016

20 years

The institute opened in 1996 in South Africa, and during the last 20 years has continuously participated to Human Capacity Development through great collaboration between South African and French academic institutions.

The programmes started at undergraduate levels, to move to its actual offering of Masters and Doctorates in the Universities of Technologies, always keeping its focus on the need of the people and the country.

F'SATI is very proud of all its present and former students and wants to to celebrate with them, its staff and its partners its 20 years of existence.

Multifunctional Robotic Walker

walker 1

For many disabled people standing, bending or walking is limited to some degree and may be difficult to achieve, with negative impacts on the quality of life.

Passive walking aids are limited to even, good quality terrain. An active robotic walker might extend the usage of the walking aids to difficult terrain and improve mobility.

One of the F'SATI@TUTproject in the field of the assistance to the handicapped is the development of adaptive user interface systems for walking aid applications. By using the users own movement capability it will promote independency, improve mobility and enhance mobility rehabilitation.
